Who are the witches of today? At which piles do we come together for rituals? How can we celebrate consensuality? "IN ZUNGEN: Hex*en Haufen Konsens" is a performative reworking of the Lusatian spring custom of "witch burning" (Upper Sorbian: Chodojtypalenje). 

 

The title-giving TONGUES are both method and material: people speak in different languages, talk about origins and traditional customs, and lick the sweat off their fire-heated skin. The audience is invited to a counter-ritual in which the performers become the witches who were not burned. Instead, witches in drag lead the audience through the evening, telling of mythological ancestors and everyday magic.  With the feminist Sorbian rap kolektiw Klanki and an expansive installation for touching and hanging out, a maelstrom of stories and textures is created that culminates in a burning pile.

 

Premiered in May 2023 at HELLERAU - Europäisches Zentrum der Künste, Dresden and LOFFT Theater, Leipzig.
